William Henry Winder a native of Baltimore, Maryland was the owner of the Winder Building in Washington, DC which became Fort Lafayette. . In 1861 he was arrested by Federal authorities and imprisoned at Fort Lafayette, then at Fort Warren, Boston until he was released in 1862. He related his imprisonment in , "Secrets of The American Bastille". In 865 US Attorney General Joseph Holt arrested many of the residents of the Winder Building after the Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. An Original Civil War inscribed item by William H Winder- "Room No 7 Basement Fort Warren 14th May 1862 W.H. Winder, Philadelphia arrested 10th Sep and placed in Fort Lafayette on 14 Sep and Transferred to sentence into Fort Warren on Nov 1" Th 4.5 x 3.5" inscription by Winder is in sepia on autograph album paper stock.
