The 21st South Carolina Infantry , organized at Georgetown, SC served in South Carolina and Virginia from 1861 to the end of the War, in General Hagood's Brigade, Hoke's Division with heavy losses in the 1864 Morris Island Campaign and at Petersburg Siege up to the end of the War. An Original Civil War Confederate officer's letter written by Lt H.M Cannon at Camp Du Bose James Island S.C. January 16th, 1864 to Corporal Gregg - He regrets he is unable to extend his Furlough as it would cause dissatisfaction to the men in the company. He also notes the Brigade is now commanded by Colonel Graham, as Hagood is on Furlough. In addition he names 2 men he would like to recruit in his company and he names some comrades who send greetings . The Letter is signed H.M Cannon The letter has an additional note form Gregg's friend H. Chappell, . Comes w service info. Lt Chappell died of wounds July 8, 1864.. Corporal Gregg was likely T.C.
