"My Four Years in Germany" is a first edition historical work by James W. Gerard, United States Ambassador to Germany from 1913 to 1917. Published in 1917 shortly after the United States severed diplomatic relations with the German Empire during World War I, the book provides a firsthand account of Germany during the years leading up to America's entry into the war.
Before his diplomatic service, Gerard was a successful attorney and Justice of the New York Supreme Court. His legal background is reflected in the book's direct and analytical style. During the period of American neutrality, the U.S. Embassy in Berlin served as the diplomatic representative for several Allied nations that had already broken relations with Germany. Gerard details his efforts to protect British, French, and Russian interests while also documenting conditions within the German Empire.
The book offers observations on the Prussian military system, the German ruling class, civilian hardships during wartime, and the treatment of prisoners of war. A bestseller upon publication, it was adapted into a successful silent film in 1918 and is considered an important firsthand account of World War I diplomacy and international relations.
