Rare Original WWII U.S. Army Air Corps Lead POW Made Wing, Stalag Luft #1, 1944: $700.00
California.Trading.Post Original WWII U.S. Army Air Corps Lead P.O.W. Made Bombardier Wing WWII U.S. POW camp–made lead pilot wings are lead–cast insignia created by American prisoners of war in German Stalags or Luftstalags during World War II. POWsused lead obtained from the seams of Red Cross cans, Red Cross candy bars, and cigarette wrappers made from lead foil. The lead was scraped, melted, and poured into molds crafted by the prisoners. This particular wing is 3" in length and has adesign typical seen from wings made at Stalag Luft #1, it is actually inscribed on the back by the airman that wore this "STALAG LUFT #1, BARTH GERMANY 6/10/44". I am unsure if the date is the date he was shot down or his internment date or both. Wing retains the original wire used to attach to a uniform. Wing has a dull finish, but has no corrosion or patina, what appears to be corrosion on the back is actually just the surface of the rough handmade casting.
