This postcard depicts several people walking through the dark interior of the Thurston Lava Tube in Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawaii.Lorrin Thurston, a newspaper publisher and advocate for the establishment of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, discovered the cavern in 1913. The geological formation, also known by its Hawaiian name N huku, is located at an elevation of 3,900 feet near the summit caldera of K lauea.The National Park Service eventually cleared the surrounding forest access, paved the floor, and installed electric lighting throughout the primary 600-foot segment. Beyond the illuminated public path, the tube extends further into complete darkness, a sector restricted from general access to preserve the fragile lava formations and ecosystem.The postcard features a handwritten message dated February 28, 1985, from Ruth to Grant: "2/28 PM Hi GRANT WE WERE HERE ~~TODAY~~ 2/28 & WALKED THRU THIS LAVA TUBE. HAVE A BEAUTIFUL ROOM WITH BALCONY OVERLOOKING THE PACIFIC. HAVE SEEN MANY BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS, FOLIAGE & TREES - HAVING A GOOD TIME - RUTH HOPE YOU'VE RECOVERED FROM YOUR COLD".
