A spectacular Victorian decorative binding enclosing a massive illustrated literary anthology of poetry, prose, quotations and inspirational writings by many of the great authors of the period.
The exceptionally ornate binding is the centerpiece: richly decorated in black and gilt, with elaborate floral and geometric ornament and a large giltPerfect Jewelstitle cartouche. The decoration continues across the spine, making this an unusually handsome display book from virtually any angle.
The substantial volume containsmore than 500 pages and 42 full-page engravings, plus hundreds of smaller illustrations throughout. Subjects range widely and include children, winter scenes, skating, Christmas and holiday imagery, landscapes, animals, literary subjects and scenes of Victorian life. Particularly striking plates include“The Snow-Storm,” “All Hallow-e’en,” “Will You Be My Valentine?”and a wonderful full-page image of a Victorian couple ice skating.
Literary selections include works and quotations byShakespeare, Emerson, Longfellow, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Miltonand numerous other writers, together with a section of brief biographies of contributors.
