Served as Senator for New York from 1909-1915.
In January 1909, Root was elected by the legislature as a
U.S. Senator from New York, serving from March 4, 1909, t
o March 3, 1915. He did not seek re-election.
In 1916 he was considered for nomination as
the GOP Presidential candidate. He did receive 103 votes
on the first ballot. Charles Evans Hughes,
however,was selected by the convention.
