Civil War 5th Regiment Colored Troops Heavy Artillery Company C Canvas Remnant
Rare small period Civil War Colored Troops canvas Remnant
This small remnant was identified as a backpack knapsack remnant when we acquired it that was saved in the 1800s and preserved in a scrapbook. It is mounted on a page removed from the scrapbook years ago. (We have had period scrapbooks over the last 45 years and the page size is correct as is the paper.)
Close inspection shows the Civil War era canvas (see close-up photos) and matches the material used comparing it to period knapsacks. Please use the photos to confirm size and condition before purchase as we are selling this as is, as shown, and will gladly answer any questions beforehand.
The West Point Museum has a flag from this same regiment and shares,
"The 5th Heavy Artillery was raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1863, originally under the name “1st Mississippi Heavy Artillery (African Descent).” The regiment helped man the defenses of Vicksburg after the city was captured by Ulysses S. Grant’s Army of the Tennessee on July 4, 1863, and took part in an expedition from Vicksburg to Yazoo City 23 November – 4 December 1864. Over the course of the war, they lost 4 officers and 124 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded in action, as well as 697 enlisted men by disease. The freedmen and women of Natchez, Mississippi presented this flag to Battery C sometime after April 1864, when the regiment received its permanent designation."
