Thank you for viewing this product. Our family has run a store that has been around for over 150 years.I decided to sell historical items that were sitting in a warehouse because I wanted to add them to someone's collection around the world.
This kokeshi doll is part of my great-grandmother's collection, and is a souvenir from Shodoshima, an island in the Shikoku region of Japan. The wooden sign on the doll says "Statue of Peace," and there are 11 children and one adult. This kokeshi doll is based on a famous Japanese story, "24 Eyes." One of the children seems to have disappeared somewhere. The story of "24 Eyes" revolves around the interactions between a newly appointed female teacher at an elementary school and her 12 students. The story depicts the tragic nature of war through the hardships and tragedies of the teacher and students as they are inevitably engulfed in the swell of history as Japan plunges headfirst into World War II.It is believed that this doll was created based on this story in hopes of peace.
