A magnificent doll “Little Girl” from master Kobayashi Inosuke

This Kokeshi is easily recognizable as the work of the famous Kobayashi. His Kokeshis are often heavy and large round pieces like this one. He is a Kokeshi Artisan Prime Minister Award winner and his kokeshis are collected all over the world. Kobayashi was born in 1931 and died at an early age. The date of his death is unknown.
Kokeshi is an ancient Japanese tradition started in the early 1800's, the wood is chosen in terms of quality, cut, and shape of the doll. Then the doll is painted with pigments and waxed with beeswax. There are 11 types of traditional kokeshi located in 11 different regions of northern Japan, they must respect precise criteria (shape, colors). Kokeshi dolls made their appearance in Japan during the Edo period (1600-1868).
