Saint George of Lydda (around 275/280 - April 23, 303), Saint George, is a 4th century martyr, according to the continuing tradition of the Catholic Church and the various Orthodox Churches. He is the patron saint, among others, of Christian chivalry, the kingdom of Great Britain since the year 800, Georgia and the gunsmiths. He is mainly represented as a knight slaying a dragon and is thus an allegory of the victory of the Christian faith over the devil or, more broadly, of good over evil.
