Here is a rare piece of Santo Domingo (or Kewa) pottery made by late potter Josefita Martinez. Josefita was well known for this style and her designs of Santo Domingo pottery with black on black etching and hand coiled pieces.
This piece is hand coiled and pit fired which helps give it that signature black on black look that
many desire.
Measures 3-3-1/2" high by approx. 4-1/2" wide. This is a handmade vase by Josefina Martinez of New Mexico. The vase is done in the Santo Domingo style of pottery. Josefita Martinez (1937-2008) is listed under the San Ildefonso Pottery site as an artist of San Ildefonso pottery and is also listed as an artist of Santo Domingo Pottery. It is signed on the bottom: 'JM' and the intials 'SDP'. The intials SDP stand for Santo Domingo Pottery. The Santo Domingo Pueblo, now known as the Kewa Pueblo is located approx. 25 miles southwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
