Originally conceived in 2006 as an idea for a Vampire-based television series by the Academy Award winning director GUILLERMO DEL TORO known for his films of fairy tale horror (Pinocchio, Pan\'s Labyrinth) as well as the comic book related movies Hellboy, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army and Marvel\'s Blade II, THE STRAIN failed to generate any interest. On a recommendation, Del Toro sought the assistance of writer Chuck Hogan, and the pair turned Del Toro\'s TV concept into a trilogy of novels, beginning with 2009\'s The Strain, with The Fall and The Night Eternal following in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
The books hit really, really well -- and shortly after The Strain\'s release, studios began contacting Del Toro and Hogan with renewed interest. They deferred any decision until late 2011, finally deciding to place the series with Fox Studios\' FX Channel, who wanted to follow the novels closely and confine the series to that content alone. The Strain made its premiere on FX in July, 2014, and ran for its planned four seasons.
Del Toro\'s approach to bringing The Strain novels to other media was similar, although Dark Horse Comics -- whom Del Toro already had a solid relationship with -- moved much faster than FX possibly could. Writer DAVID LAPHAM and artist MIKE HUDDLESTON launched their 11-issue adaptation of The Strain in December, 2011. The series did not adhere to a regular schedule, however, concluding over two years later in February, 2013. Lapham and Huddleston\'s adaption of the second novel, The Fall, launched just months later, in July 2013 and concluded the following summer, just days ahead of the title\'s FX debut.
Dark Horse\'s The Strain, like the FX series, centers around DR. EPHRAIN GOODWEATHER, the head of the CDC\'s New York-based Canary Project, who is called upon to investigate a Boeing 777 which lands at JFK airport, going dark on the runway and which initially is suspected as a possible terrorist attack of biological origin. Goodweather discovers all but 4 individuals on the plane -- dead, they\'ll later discover, from an apparent viral outbreak that has similarities to an ancient strain of vampirism. This knowledge comes too late, however, as the virus begins to spread. Even so, Goodweather finds an unlikely ally: an elderly Spanish pawnbroker, ABRAHAM SETRAKIAN, who seems to have intimate knowledge of the threat the City is facing and the monsters it is creating.
