Artist Biography:

• Hilario Mendivil Velazco (1928) was born in the heart of San Blas, inherited his craft from his mother. He mastered the intricate techniques of crafting wooden bodies, clothing them in fabrics secured with materials like plaster and carpenter's glue, and giving them a sturdy foundation. Using cattle weight, flours, natural dyes, feathers, and other materials, he produced bulk images for the region's temples. Hilario's untimely passing at the age of 47 didn't halt the tradition. His work lives on through Georgina and her children, who continue to create using the same methods passed down by Ms. Luisa, Hilario's mother.
