   Setsuko Hayasaka (1935-)Lineage: Naruko

   Master: Takashi Born on December 6, 1935, in Sambongi Town, Shida District, Miyagi Prefecture, as the eldest daughter of farmers Sakuji and Masao Saito. She graduated from Sambongi Elementary School. In 1955, she married Takashi Hayasaka, a woodturner from Naruko. Takashi was independent at the time but had previously worked at the woodworking shop of Saikichi Okazaki, where he turned kokeshi wood but had never done painting. Starting around 1956, Setsuko began painting Takashi's woodwork by imitating what she saw. In 1958, Takashi opened a shop in the Kawamukai area, displaying kokeshi painted by Setsuko. Their eldest son Toshinari was born in July 1960.

   In 1966, encouraged by collectors, Takashi also began painting. Takashi and Setsuko were introduced as kokeshi artists in the June 1967 issue of "Kokeshi Notebook No. 76." In October 1969, they moved their souvenir shop from Naruko's main street to the hillside road leading to Naruko Elementary School and began selling their kokeshi there. Since then, they have consistently continued making kokeshi. Their eldest son Toshinari started woodturning training in 1979. Takashi passed away on March 15, 2010.
