Wear commensurate with age.The Store:Edwards & Walker Co was founded November 6, 1876 by Bryce M Edwards and Frederick Walker, originally at 274 Middle Street, incorporated in 1893, and moved to this location, the former United States Hotel, in 1902.
Built at Hay Market (now Monument) Square in 1803, the United States Hotel was originally called the Washington Hall hotel, then the Portland House and the Cumberland House.
By 1840, it was named the United States Hotel, and even received President James K Polk in 1846.
It was remodeled in the early 1870s when a fifth floor was added, and closed in 1900; Edwards & Walker Hardware Co moved in two years later.It was sold to Casco Bank in 1965, which replaced it in 1970 with a ten-story office building, One Monument Square.
