Additional arsenal/inspection markings and numbers are present on the swords.Spanish-American War ConnectionThe 1898 manufacture date is particularly significant: these swords were produced in Spain during the very year of the Spanish-American War, when Spain fought the United States in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.This places the pair directly within the Spanish-American War military era and gives them considerably more historical interest than an undated example of the pattern.No claim is made that these particular swords participated in the conflict, as no individual service provenance accompanies them.
