However, when the Washburn brothers bought the property and expanded the resort, the town and local post office officially changed their names toWawonain 1883—long before the 1915 postcard message was written.The name comes from the local Indigenous Miwok word for \"big trees,\" meant to mimic the hoot of the great gray owl, a sacred spirit believed to protect the nearby giant sequoiaThe photograph captures the hotel grounds nestled among towering ponderosa pines and incense cedars. On the right side of the lawn, a series of canvasguest tentsare visible.
