Original 1949 Historical Map of Early Colorado, drawn by C. W. (Charles W.) Love and prepared by the State Historical Society of Colorado.

This large color pictorial map presents Colorado’s early history through an exceptionally detailed combination of cartography, historical illustrations, portraits and annotated pioneer routes. The map traces early exploration and transportation routes across Colorado while illustrating important forts, settlements, mining discoveries and events from the state’s frontier history.

The decorative border incorporates portraits and historical scenes associated with prominent figures and events in Colorado history, including Chief Ouray, John C. Frémont, Zebulon Pike, John Evans, William Gilpin and others. Within the map are numerous identified routes and locations including Gunnison’s Route, Frémont’s Route, Berthoud and Bridger’s route, the Overland Stage Route, Smoky Hill Trail, Bent’s Fort and Fort Pueblo, along with historical references including the Meeker conflict, Sand Creek and early Colorado mining activity.
