Antique 1840s–1860s Black Glass Wine Bottle Open Pontil Hand Blown
Description
Offered is an authentic mid-19th century hand-blown black glass wine or porter bottle, dating to approximately circa 1840–1870. This bottle exhibits classic early production characteristics including a thick applied blob (club) lip, irregular hand-tooled finish, and a clearly visible open pontil scar on the base, confirming free-blown manufacture prior to the widespread adoption of mold-blown and machine-made processes.
The bottle is formed in a traditional shouldered wine/porter shape with a tall neck and cylindrical body. The glass is a deep black olive tone, appearing nearly opaque under normal light, consistent with early beverage bottles intended to protect contents from sunlight. The surface shows strong hand-blown character with natural waviness, stretch marks, and internal striations from early glassmaking techniques.
Interior staining and residue are present, indicating historic use and long burial or storage, adding to its authenticity and period character. Bottles of this form were commonly used for wine, porter, stout, or imported liquors, and were often reused for many years.

This is an excellent representative example of a mid-19th century utilitarian bottle and would display well in collections of early glass, historic tavern or cellar artifacts, or maritime trade material.
Condition
Antique condition with expected age wear.Surface shows natural production irregularities, light scuffing, and interior staining from historic use. No cracks detected. No modern repairs. Pontil scar remains intact and visible. Please review all photos for exact condition details.
