An extraordinary handmade horticultural scrapbook assembled during the early twentieth century. Its compiler selected and mounted illustrations, photographs, and descriptive material from multiple contemporary horticultural sources, creating a personal visual archive devoted to ornamental gardening.
The volume contains approximately70 original mounted chromolithographic color plates, together with numerousoriginal black-and-white nursery photographsshowing mature gardens, flowering vines, shrubs, estate plantings, pergolas, porches, and landscape designs.
Represented subjects include:roses, iris, peonies, clematis, wisteria, dahlias, trumpet flower (Tecoma), gaillardia, hardy perennials, flowering shrubs, climbing vines, and landscape plantings.
The chromolithographs are exceptionally decorative, many occupying full pages with brilliant color and remarkable detail. The period nursery photographs add another dimension, documenting how these plants were actually displayed in established American gardens of the period.

Research indicates that Fannie Maud Votey was the daughter ofEdwin S. Votey (1856–1931), inventor of the Pianola.Before offering the scrapbook, I contacted the Votey family through the Mechanical Music Digest in an effort to locate descendants; no response was received.
I have been unable to locate another comparable handmade horticultural archive of this scope and character.
