Antique Coalport / Coalbrookdale Flower-Encrusted Porcelain Covered Bowl
England, circa 1830–1845 — attributed to Coalport
Exceptional early 19th-century English porcelain covered bowl or small tureen, attributed to Coalport and decorated in the elaborate Coalbrookdale style.
The piece is lavishly decorated with individually modeled and applied three-dimensional porcelain flowers, leaves and trailing vines. It also features beautifully hand-painted floral bouquets and butterflies/insects, extensive hand-painted gilt/gold scroll decoration, colorful twig-form handles and an ornate rococo-style footed base.
The domed lid is particularly elaborate, with numerous applied flowers and foliage surrounding painted butterfly decoration.
This piece is unmarked. Attribution is based on its form and decoration and comparison with documented Coalport/Coalbrookdale examples from the circa 1830–1845 period. It is therefore being offered as attributed to Coalport, rather than as a definitively marked Coalport piece.
Measurements:
Approximately 7.5" wide × 5.5" high.
Condition:
Very attractive antique condition considering the age and extremely delicate nature of the applied decoration. There is an approximately ½" fine hairline on the interior rim only, which does not appear to extend through to the exterior.
As expected with heavily flower-encrusted porcelain of this age, there are scattered small chips/nibbles and losses to some individual petals, flowers and foliage. There is also age-related wear/loss to portions of the gilt decoration.
