Antique Belgian brass picture frame by Ernest Houbion of Dinant, signed “E. HOUBION DINANT.”
An unusual example of Belgian dinanderie, featuring deeply embossed/repoussé roses and foliage across an asymmetrical sculptural frame. The center holds an oval photograph, with an easel stand to the reverse.
Measures approximately 13” tall x 11” wide at its widest points.
Good antique condition with substantial original patina, oxidation, discoloration and surface wear consistent with age. The rear photo backing is loose/separating along one side and bottom and may require adjustment or repair. However, it is intact. Please see photographs for complete condition and measurements.
About the Maker:
Ernest Houbion was a Belgian dinandier (decorative metalworker) active in Dinant, Belgium, during the early 20th century. His workshop was part of Dinant’s centuries-old tradition of dinanderie—the art of shaping and decorating brass and copper by hammering, repoussé and related metalworking techniques. The craft takes its name from the city of Dinant, which had been renowned for its brasswork since the Middle Ages.
Houbion was among the recognized Dinant workshops active during the interwar period, and surviving pieces include decorative vessels, trays, plaques and other ornamental metalwork. Period references to the Anciens Établissements Houbion and surviving examples bearing the “E. HOUBION DINANT” maker’s mark document his workshop and production. This frame bears that same E. Houbion Dinant mark and is a fine example of the decorative Belgian metalwork tradition for which the city became famous.
