Beautiful small Pwo female mask carefully carved with incredible detail. Narrowed eyes, chiseled teeth, scarification, finely hollowed interior and a coiffure rendered artfully. Surface of great complexity, very hard petrified wood, layers of paint.
About 8 inches tall x near 4 3/4 inches wide x 2 3/4 inches deep. Weighs about 7 1/4 ounces. Carefully brilliant & evocative.
Suffocating categories relating to the nature of African art work to devalue masterful works such as this. This is not a copy - it\'s a traditional tribal mask carved and given life by a highly skilled African artisan. The wood is very old. This piece has gravity by itself - it is not trying to be anything else. A gem.
