The hardest-working digger I ever knew, when really humping, could maybe shovel three or four yards a day. I was one of those small-scale diggers, but in all honesty probably couldn't process more than one or two yards of dirt. Our tools were the same ones used by lone-wolf miners for centuries. If you plan on becoming a full-time, small-scale miner, better start building up those callouses. I scored my first blister today in quite a spell. There's nothing like a Georgia Drag Line (a shovel) and pickaxe for toughening up the hands. Guys like me use what's available, affordable, and most practical. Nowadays, prospectors enjoy distinct advantages the old timers didn't have. A few examples are jumbo Cats, backhoes, dump trucks, excavators, front-end loaders,ATVs, helicopters, Lidar, magnetometers, and suction dredges. Of course, you'll find most modern prospectors outfitted with an armload of fancy metal detectors. Lone wolf miners working by hand become very intimate with gold. After several years, you develop a sixth sense for where it's hidden beneath the earth's skin. Without aid of big machinery, a guy has to be selective in choosing what ground should be run. Don't shovel overburden or unproven dirt into a high-banker, sluice, or drywasher if you don't have a clue what's in it. If you're doing bulk sampling, that's another matter. 'Hungry dirt' was never a foreign concept to me. I was the guy determined to extract every last speck from whatever material seemed to contain some gold. Of course, after a few years, you get a lot pickier. If you're not finding much, but you've a good idea gold's in the area, keep digging and expand your search. My guess is they rolled back concentrates in their trays and seeing good color, felt that familiar surge of joyful excitement. Back then, going it alone on foot is just what prospectors did. The fewer people who knew where you were going, the better. Claim-jumpers are a watchful brood of skunks. They come in all stripes but basically just don't give a hoot about whose hole they jump in. Through the years, despite the occasional predatory run-in, prospecting fit me to a T. Alone in the desert, a person can almost taste the tranquility. Then, to find wild, virgin gold; unearthing it whereno one else thought to look...that's more rewarding than how much 'yeller' fell into your poke.In the SW Arizona desert, big nuggets always have been an anomaly. They're rare. In other regions of the world, it's an altogether different story. Several years ago, like back in the 70s and 80s, ten ounce Australian nuggets were the rule, not the exception. I have that on good authority from a friend who traded in monstrous gold nuggets. My old stomping grounds, the desert regions where I prospected, never saw ten ounce nuggets. I was a born-and-raised, small-scale American miner. Most Arizona's diggin's are considerably leaner, isolated fields where a quarter ounce lead or half a pennyweight nugget represents a memorable moment in time. They still do. Whenever a prospector finds something like that in southwestern Arizona or southeastern California, it's a thrill. Working such hungry diggins', a guy doesn't become jaded. In the bottom of a clear, water-filled vial, every little nugget, even pea-sized ones, look as large as the sun itself blazing inside that bottle.
