Ferret among the Nutcrackers - Modern Ferret Christmas gift - 8x10 PHOTO Print For Sale

This photograph was originally created as a centerfold image for Modern Ferret magazine.

The scene features a ferret standing upright in the middle of a colorful group of wooden nutcracker soldiers, as if it has somehow joined the regiment. The dark background and theatrical lighting give the whole setup the feel of a slightly surreal holiday portrait.

The image was staged and photographed specifically for Modern Ferret, combining the magazine’s usual ferret humor with a classic Christmas display.

I no longer remember which issue this centerfold appeared in, so I’m identifying it simply as an original Modern Ferret centerfold photograph rather than guessing at the issue number.

This is me with my ferret Marshmallow around 1993, shortly before I started Modern Ferret magazine. Marshmallow was one of the three original Modern Ferret ferrets, along with Sabrina and Ralph.

Producing the magazine pushed me to improve both my photography and design skills—often while crawling around on the floor at ferret level with a camera.

Since then, I’ve continued photographing animals and creating other visual work.
