Antique 1888 Victorian Certificate of Merit Framed by Arthur West Crewe
On offer is a fascinating piece of late 19th-century educational history: an original Victorian Certificate of Merit dated December 15th, 1888. This "Classico" certificate was issued by the Midland Educational Co. (Birmingham & Leicester) and presented to John Smith upon passing the 4th Standard. It is hand-signed by the Vicar, George J. Howson M.A., and notes examination by Her Majesty's Inspector, H. S. Gleadowe Esqre.
The document features wonderful, crisp Victorian neoclassical allegorical illustrations representing Art and Science, complete with cherubs and classical architectural pillars.

What makes this piece exceptionally rare and highly collectible is its original Victorian aesthetic wooden frame with distinctive white corner studs/buttons. The reverse features the complete, authentic trade label of Arthur West, Carver & Gilder, and Picture Frame Manufacturer located at 3 Coppenhall Terrace and 29 Market St, Crewe (Established 1849). This adds a superb layer of provenance and deep interest for Cheshire and Crewe local history collectors.
