Up for sale is a beautifully restored 1938 Zenith 6S223 table top radio. This radio has been gone through and is fully operational, blending classic 1930s tube warmth with modern streaming functionality.
🛠️ Technical & Electrical Upgrades
The chassis has been completely electronically overhauled for long-term safety and peak performance: Capacitors & Resistors: All legacy paper and electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with high-quality modern equivalents. Out-of-tolerance carbon composition resistors were replaced.
Safety Features: Upgraded with a brand-new polarized power cord and plug to ensure correct chassis polarity. A safety fuse has been added to the back of the chassis—fully visible and easily accessible. The Tubes & Controls: The radio warms up beautifully and plays strong. A previous owner replaced the tone control switch prior to my ownership; it works fine so I left it.
🎵 Custom AUX Port ModificationEnjoy your favorite classic rock, modern live tracks, or podcasts straight through this vintage tube amplifier!A custom Stereo-to-Mono AUX input port and toggle switch assembly has been added.To preserve the absolute historical integrity of the radio chassis, the jack and toggle switch are housed in a dedicated box mounted cleanly inside the bottom of the cabinet adjacent to the chassis.The wiring paths travel safely through an existing factory hole in the top of the chassis—no new holes were drilled into the metal. Simply flip the switch to stream from your phone, tablet.
🌲 Cabinet & Cosmetic ConditionThe cabinet veneer is in beautiful shape and shows off striking grain:The Finish: The cabinet was gently cleaned and touched up using professional Mohawk toner lacquers and clear coats to restore its original luster while maintaining its vintage soul.
Original Components: Features the original factory speaker in excellent condition, the original acoustic grille cloth, and original Zenith wood knobs.
Note: There are two small hairline cracks in the veneer on the middle pillar of the speaker grille. They do not affect the structural integrity and are typical for a 100-year-old piece of fine furniture (see photos).
📡 Reception & Operational Video
AM Band: Receives local stations clearly. Like all vintage tube radios, a good external longwire antenna and a solid ground line are highly recommended to pull in distant stations. Reception will vary depending on your local terrain and shielding.
Shortwave Band: Fully operational! Shortwave reception varies greatly depending on the time of day, atmospheric conditions, and your antenna setup.
About the Demo Video: The included listing video was recorded inside my basement using only a simple short wire antenna (which is included with the purchase) and no ground line hooked up. There is some minor background static in the video due to the basement environment and lack of a dedicated earth ground—the video was shot purely to demonstrate that the radio tunes, amplifies, and functions perfectly across the board.
