A scarce pair of early American Hebrew-school textbooks, sold together — a nice find for Judaica collectors and anyone researching the history of Jewish education in America.

1. HaMeivin LaMikra(“Language Lessons for Beginners, Preparing Students for Torah Study”), Part 1. Shilo Publishing House, New York. Copyright 1929 byZevi Scharfstein— one of the most prolific and influential Hebrew-language educators in American Jewish history, author of roughly 100 Hebrew textbooks for children across a 423-work career, founder of Shilo Publishing House, and longtime instructor at the Jewish Theological Seminary’s Teachers Institute. His textbooks were still considered classics in Hebrew schools decades after publication. Blue cloth binding, illustrated boards.

2. Chumash LeTalmidim(“Chumash for Students”), Part 2: Shemot-Vayikra (Exodus-Leviticus). With illustrations, review questions, independent-study exercises, and a Hebrew-English glossary.
