Original 1939 New York World’s Fair Snapshot Photo Album – 25 Photographs: $95.00
Original period vernacular photograph album documenting a visitor’s trip to New York during the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The album contains 25 original black-and-white photographs, with 24 photographs remaining mounted in period photo corners and one larger loose photograph preserved at the rear of the album.A substantial portion of the album documents the 1939 New York World’s Fair at Flushing Meadows, with multiple recognizable views of the fairgrounds, architecture, monumental sculpture and attractions.Identified subjects include multiple views of the iconic Trylon and Perisphere; multiple photographs of James Earle Fraser’s monumental George Washington statue at Constitution Mall; Paul Manship’s Celestial Sphere; and a particularly interesting photograph of the USSR / Soviet Pavilion showing the monumental Lenin relief and revolutionary inscription. The album also documents the visitor’s wider New York trip. Maritime photographs include the historic party-fishing vessel SACHEM and other scenes believed to show the Sheepshead Bay fishing fleet and waterfront. Additional photographs show the Brooklyn Bridge / Lower Manhattan area, Manhattan skyline and New York harbor scenes. One larger loose photograph at the rear appears to show the New England Exhibit at the 1939 World’s Fair and is strongly believed to depict the exhibit’s schooner YANKEE, displayed against the exhibit’s recreated New England waterfront architecture. This identification is presented as likely rather than definitive.Other photographs include World’s Fair fountains, landscaping, monumental sculpture, a Dutch-style windmill scene, nighttime illumination, a personal portrait and a dog. This is not a commercial souvenir photo set or postcard collection. The changing viewpoints, personal photographs, waterfront sightseeing and original album sequence form a coherent vernacular photographic record of one visitor’s New York / World’s Fair trip.Condition: Original vintage condition with age-related wear. Cloth-covered album boards show normal surface wear, marks and aging. Album pages show toning and handling wear. Photographs exhibit varying degrees of age-related toning, fading/contrast variation, surface reflection/silvering, minor edge or corner wear and occasional slight curling consistent with approximately 87 years of age. One larger photograph is loose rather than corner-mounted. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.Album and photographs are being sold intact and in their existing sequence. No photographs have been removed for inspection. An unusual original photographic record combining the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Art Deco sculpture and architecture, Soviet Pavilion imagery, historic New York maritime material and period New York City views. Please see all photographs, which form an important part of the description.
