Takahashi Shōtei (1871–1945) – Moon at Ishiyama, Lake Biwa
Original Japanese Woodblock Print on Washi Paper | Tanzaku Format
Original Japanese woodblock print by celebrated shin-hanga artistTakahashi Shōtei (1871–1945)/ Hiroaki, titled"Moon at Ishiyama, Lake Biwa" (Ishiyama no Tsuki). This atmospheric nocturnal landscape is one of Shōtei's most recognizable moonlit compositions and beautifully captures the quiet elegance and poetic mood for which the artist is renowned.
The scene depicts a temple pavilion dramatically perched atop a rocky cliff overlooking Lake Biwa under a luminous full moon. Moonlight reflects across the calm water where a solitary sailboat glides through the distance. Layered clouds drift across the night sky while illuminated buildings below add warmth and depth to the composition. The subtle gradations of blue, gray, and silver tones exemplify the refined craftsmanship of Japanese woodblock printing.
The print bearsShōtei's distinctive double-gourd (hyōtan) sealand the title inscription"Moon at Ishiyama" (石山之月). Examination outside its original vintage wood frame revealed traditionalfibrous washi paperwith visible translucency when held to light, along with characteristics consistent with authentic Japanese woodblock printing, including pigment penetration and paper texture visible on the reverse.
This print was acquired in an older vintage frame and mat, suggesting it has been preserved and displayed for many decades. The image remains visually striking and displays beautifully.
