This 1938 postcard captures a Pueblo woman baking bread in a traditional horno, or outdoor adobe oven, in the Pueblo of Tesuque, New Mexico. Tesuque is one of the Tewa-speaking Northern Rio Grande Pueblos and is located just north of Santa Fe. These dome-shaped ovens—coated with adobe mud inside and out—have been used for centuries and are central to Pueblo culinary traditions, especially for baking thick loaves of unleavened bread.
The woman in the image is shown using a wooden paddle to manage the bread inside the horno, wearing traditional Southwestern attire with a patterned shawl. The sturdy adobe structures and exposed wooden beams behind her reflect the enduring architectural style of the Pueblo communities.
