Ex: R. M. Smythe & Co., 1996 St. Louis PCDA sale, lot 1672; offerdle Collection (Christian Blom)
Ex: Heritage sales (HA) # 3583, 2021 Dallas, Lot No.20483TAKE NOTICE: This banknote was incorrectly certified by PMG to be a "Counterfeit" throughout it's modern circulation and sold as such at the sales listed above. The 2021 HA sale high buyer discoveredtwo anti-counterfeiting security features that prove this banknote's authenticity and in 2023, it was resubmitted to PMG where it was regraded and properly certified to be genuine. The two anti-counterfeiting security measuresthat distinguish this 1823 $50 Bank of the United States (B.U.S.) Banknote from that of a counterfeit are as follows: 1) There exists a well executed security watermark that is beautifully shaped in a multitude of intertwined circles that run nearly the length of the banknote. This security watermark can be examined by back-lighting the banknote (see photos for details). 2) There exists another secret security mark that can be seen in the headdress of the vignette in the lower right hand corner of the banknote. If you examine it closely, you will see a bird engraved in the vignette's headdress (see photos for details). These anti-counterfeiting security measures exhibit very early methods for fighting counterfeiters and affirm the rarity of this banknote. This genuine $50 B.U.S., Philadelphia, PA banknote is extremely rare and the only known survivor to exist. Historical footnote: This PMG certified genuine 1823 $50 banknote was signed, issued, and circulating in Philadelphia, PA five months after Nicholas offerdle became President of the Bank of the United States. During offerdle's tenure as President of the B.U.S., the Bank War would erupt and he and his "monster bank" battled U.S. President Andrew Jackson until Jackson vetoed its recharter, thereby killing it. This 1823 $50 banknote's value is given in part to its circulation and direct connection to this exciting time period in American History.
