Antique 17th Century Jesus Scourging St. Gertrude Spanish Shipwreck Bronze Medal For Sale

This medal is from my mother's estate collection, and itwas discovered when it washed up on one of the many Caribbean Island beachesshe visited, whose location was lost to history with her death at age 97 in2010.Ecce Homo, Christ with crown of thorns, cloak, and cane as scepter. Hiswrists are bound. The image on the medal was most likely inspired by thepainting by the Venetian artist Titian in 1547.

On the obverse: Gertrude the Great, OSB (or SaintGertrude of Helfta; Italian: Santa Gertrude, German: Gertrud die Große vonHelfta, Latin: Sancta Gertrudis; January 6, 1256 -- November 17, 1302) was aGerman Benedictine nun and mystic from the monastery of Helfta. She isrecognized as a saint by the Catholic Church and figures in the General RomanCalendar on November 16 for optional celebration as a memorial throughout theRoman Rite.This medal is 1.75 inches hanging length and it weighs 22 grams.

This medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 ofthe book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published byNUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004.In addition, this book has chapters (outlinedin the table of contents), describing each of the categories of medals, theirpossible place of pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of the mint where theywere made.
