DETAILS: Originalgelatin silver photograph by George Dalgeish of "Chimney Rock", a general store / scientific repair shop, he had behind his photographic studio in Georgetown, Colorado. Circa 1890. The writing above the shop reads: 1883, Franklin Hermitage, Philosophic Scientific Repairs,Clocks, Coopering Chairs, SawsFiled, Tinware, Politics and Philosophy Tinkered. Measures 7" x 5" inches.On theverso, writtenin pencil: The Hermitage was built by the old man standing in the door. He also built the stairway up to his own grave which he dug and erected his headstone (a pillar).You will notice at the left of the picture and painted upon it'The End of the Road to Eternity', read the sign above the door"
BIOGRAPHY: The following is a biography of the proprietor that appeared in the local Georgetown newspaper on August 3, 1898:DEATH OF B. F. SOUTHGATE. On Thursday morning, August 1, there died in Georgetown, a man whose eccentric life has caused him to be known far and wide. Benjamin Franklin Southgate was born in Bridgeport, Vermont, on the 3th day of August, 1804. He was a millwright and carpenter by trade and in early life accumulated considerable wealth and operated an extensive wood manufacturing establishment in his native town, but an unlucky day came and everything he had was washed away in a freshet... in 1880, he traveled for two years, and came to Georgetown in 1883, and established his well known wooden novelty shop, making all the machinery himself out of wood. Over his door is the sign: Franklin Hermitage. Philosophic Scientific Repair Shop. Clocks, Coopering, Chairs. Saws Filed. Tinware, Politics and Theology Tinkered...
