Offered here is an original autograph letter signed by William Alexander Richardson (1811–1875), U.S. Senator from Illinois, Mexican–American War Major, and close political ally of Stephen A. Douglas.
The letter is penned on lined stationery and reads:
*“Senate Chamber
Washington
Dear Sir,
I send as you request ‘Autographs’
Yours Truly,
W. A. Richardson”*
Richardson served in the Mexican–American War, rising to the rank of Major, and later represented Illinois in Congress (1847–56, 1861–63) and the U.S. Senate (1863–65). He was a noted Democratic leader, one of Stephen A. Douglas’s strongest supporters, and briefly Governor of the Nebraska Territory.
This is a fine example of his autograph, written during his Senate years in Washington. The letter remains in good condition with light toning, faint handling marks, and small mounting traces on the reverse, as shown.
Dimensions: approx. 8\" x 5\"
Condition: Very good; light age toning and corner wear; clear bold signature.
A scarce and desirable autograph from a significant Illinois politician and Mexican War veteran.
